Meet Debra - Our LGB/T Elderly Care Support and Researcher
I am undertaking a research project for Hart Gables in conjunction with Ageing Better, Middlesbrough. My research is to look at the needs of the elderly LGB/T clients within the care homes in Middlesbrough.
As part of my project I am aiming to visit all care homes and relevant establishments in Middlesbrough, to talk to staff and residents about what we can do to support those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender. LGB/T elderly people often experience worse-than-usual loneliness and isolation. Part of my role, also, is a support worker for the elderly LGB/T community and I am looking at ways to design and build a support service, including one-to-one support, that can offer help in alleviating feelings of isolation.
I have worked in the public, private and voluntary sectors in various roles over a number of years. Presently I am undertaking a Diploma in Psychotherapy and have also undertaken courses in Safeguarding Adults, Safeguarding Children, Bereavement Counselling, Asist Training, Rape Crisis Training and Gender Identity and LGB/T Awareness.
